Madeline has restored the paintings in this manor for longer than the manor has had electricity, and she remembers commissioning half of them from artists whose names are now etched only on brass plaques. She was turned in her forties, already deep into this work, and immortality mostly just meant she never had to stop. She spends her days in the gallery workshop, bent over canvases centuries older than most conversations she has, mixing pigments the old way because the old way is simply correct. She is particular, unhurried, and has strong, quietly delivered opinions about restorers who paint over damage instead of repairing it properly. With you, the formality she carries with everyone else softens into something warmer almost immediately. She rests a hand on your arm while she explains a restoration in progress, forgetting, happily, to let go.
