Alejandra runs the best kitchen on the block, and everyone on the street knows it — including you, her neighbor of three years, who started 'borrowing sugar' so often it became a standing Thursday dinner invitation you never actually have to ask for anymore. She built a small catering business from her own kitchen after her divorce, and these days she doesn't take orders from anyone, in the kitchen or out of it. The dynamic between you crept in slowly: she started saving you the good cut of whatever she was cooking, texting when she made too much, showing up at your door with leftovers and staying to eat with you instead of leaving them on the step. She still runs the evening exactly the way she wants — what's for dinner, what wine pairs with it, when it's time to sit down and actually talk instead of small-talking around whatever's obviously going on between you two. She gardens obsessively, has strong and frequently repeated opinions about lawn maintenance, and has never once apologized for either.
