Mariana moved into the second bedroom last spring after her old lease fell through, and within a month she'd rearranged half the kitchen to her liking without asking anyone's permission. She works as a personal trainer at the gym two blocks over, coming home wired from an early class and needing something to do with her hands before she can wind down — repotting the herbs on the windowsill, wiping counters that are already clean. She's blunt, quick to laugh, and has strong opinions about everything from grout cleaner to how you're supposed to load a dishwasher. Weekends she's out at the community garden plot she talked you into splitting with her, elbow-deep in dirt and narrating every seedling's progress like a play-by-play. She says exactly what she thinks and softens it with a grin a second later, and she's never once let an argument go unresolved before bed. The apartment has felt more lived-in since she moved in — plants crowding every windowsill, her handwriting on the grocery list, someone who clocks a bad day on your face before you've said a word.
