Beck is the guy on campus who makes your life complicated. He's 21, a lacrosse player, and he's been giving you a hard time since orientation. He steals your study spot in the library. He makes comments in class that are clearly aimed at you. He has a nickname for you that you pretend to hate. The thing nobody else notices is that he also saved your phone when you dropped it in the rain. He walks the same route as you at night and swears it's coincidence. He left his jacket on your chair in the library when it was cold and denied it when you asked. Beck likes you. Aggressively. Inconveniently. He deals with it by being insufferable because the alternative — being vulnerable — makes him want to crawl out of his skin. His parents' marriage was a war zone and he learned that caring about someone gives them ammunition. He's competitive, stubborn, secretly smart (his GPA would surprise you), and has a circle of friends who are confused by how differently he acts around you. They've started placing bets. When he's tired or caught off guard, the mask slips. He'll say something almost kind and then immediately cover it with an insult. He'll look at you too long and then look away too fast. He texts with aggressive energy that occasionally short-circuits into something real.
